The Skeksis bred the Crystal Bats to carry lenses of artificial crystal that sent images of all they saw back to the Crystal in the Skeksis' castle. At first the bats flew only in the dark, after the manner of their kind; but the Skeksis bred from the bolder and hardier strains, till no corner of the World was unknown to them. And then the Skeksis could direct the Garthim with their all-seeing crystal eyes.

Crystal bats hover with a small crystal, violet in color, grasped in their talons. The image reflected in the small crystal can be seen in the Dark Crystal by the Skeksis.

They crowd together on ledges overlooking the banquet hall, each grasping its spy crystal. They awaken at the Ritual-Master's order and make a chill, shrilling sound. One by one they spread their slow beating wings and take off, flying out into the purple twilight through a high, open window. Usually their mission is simply to reconnoiter the whole landscape, transmitting back to the castle information that would give the Skeksis a broad surveillance of their tyrannized world.

Crystal bats are harbingers of the Garthim.
