Items Never Released

The following items were planned for release, but never made it to store shelves:

Action Figures

In 1982 Hasbro reintroduced G.I. Joe in a 3 3/4" concept which allowed greater use of vehicles.  G.I. Joe - A Real American Hero was an overnight sales success.  In 1983 Hasbro's product development team presented Transformers, another major sales giant.  Producing the hottest new action figure lines in back to back years won the Hasbro development teams a huge workload.  Kenner's Star Wars - Return of the Jedi and Mattel's Masters of the Universe were also mega-action figure sensations in 1983.

It was in this environment that Hasbro, working in junction with its Aviva Toy Company subsidiary, developed a line for The Dark Crystal, the fantasy film from Henson Associates.  These characters used puppet technology similar to that which Frank Oz of Henson incorporated into Yoda for George Lucas' Star Wars trilogy.  Each of the six main characters came with a piece of the magical crystal which could be assembled when you "collected 'em all."  Three additional larger figures - the Landstrider, Mystic, and Garthim - were also in the original group slated for release.  Development proceeded to tooling for the nine figures and printed cards for the main six figures.  The line, however, does not appear in the Hasbro catalogs from 1983 or 1984.  Either Hasbro decided its plate was too full, or the retailers thought there were too many other sure sellers to get involved with The Dark Crystal series.  It's a neat concept, but unfortunately, never saw any retailers' shelves.
