Oswald Morris

"Ozzie was shooting all of the footage through a lightflex, which was a unit that sits on the front of the camera, and it gives a faint color tint to every scene.  It was Ozzie's feeling that he was trying to create a sense of magic, a sense of fairytale.  By giving it that sort of overall color wash he felt it would look more like some of Brian's original paintings." - Jim Henson

 

 

For Oswald Morris, B.S.C. (Director of Photography) The Dark Crystal is the culmination of a long and successful career, which began in 1932 when he worked for no salary at ASFI Studios, London. In World War II, he served with the RAF, winning both the DFC and AFC. His film credits include an Academy Award for Fiddler on the Roof and British Academy Awards for The Hill, The Pumpkin Eater, and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.

Morris's ability has been acknowledged by such directors as Sidney Lumet, Carol Reed, and John Juston, with whom he has worked frequently. His many other films include Moulin Rouge, Oliver!, The Man with the Golden Gun, The Odessa File, Equus, The Wiz, and The Great Muppet Caper.
