Brian Smithies

Brian Smithies, in charge of special mechanical effects, trained as a sculptor but became involved in filmmaking when he was asked to create cats, Roman statues, and other set pieces for Cleopatra.

He went on to commercial films, then joined Derek Meddings for the television series Thunderbirds and stayed with him for fourteen years, working on such films as Aces High, The Land Time Forgot, Shout at the Devil, and You Only Live Twice.

With special-effects director Wally Veerers, he worked on Diamonds Are Forever and Zeppelin. On Superman, after working with Meddings and Les Bowie, Smithies took over direction of the model unit. He directed the storm sequence in Dracula and was in charge of floor effects for Clash of the Titans and The Great Muppet Caper.
